BEFORE AN EMERGENCY: PROACTIVE STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO SAFEGUARD YOUR PETS.
• Identify a safe place for your pet ahead of time. Evacuation shelters will not typically accept pets except for service animals with certification papers. Make a list of pet-friendly places outside your immediate area. Include on the list friends, boarding facilities, motels and veterinary offices that might be able to shelter animals.
• Ensure your pets are able to be identified. Make sure your pets are collared, tagged (even if they are indoor animals) and micro-chipped.
• Make sure your pets are vaccinated. Keep your pet’s vaccinations current and keep their vaccination certifications in your pet emergency kit. Most boarding facilities will require proof of vaccination status before admitting your pets.
• Prepare your pet for being crated. Crate train your pet before disaster strikes, and be sure to have crates ready to take with you, should you need to evacuate.
